You will need a crochet hook and some worsted weight yarn, but any yarn will do.
It is best to practice on the same weight yarn you are using for your project.
This picture shows the way to hold the yarn and hook. This is known as the pencil grip and is the most common method used.

Hold the crochet hook with the same hand and the same way that you would hold a pencil. Make sure you use a grip so the hook doesn't slip but not too tight or you will get tired hands.
A crochet project usually starts with a slip knot.
Step 1. This picture shows how to start a slip knot. Make sure you leave enough of a tail to hold as you continue.
Wrap the yarn over the end of the hook, or move the hook to grab the yarn with the hook. This is Yarn Over and the abbreviation is yo.
Step 2. This picture shows what it will look like once you have completed the slip knot. Pull the yarn firmly but not too tight, as you want to be able to pull the hook through easily.
